The mines of Tintaya and Antapaccay, which belong to the mining company Xstrata Copper, are located in the region of Cusco, Peru, at the Espinar province. The commodity explored by this company is the structural copper, extracted from the minerals chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite. The main aim of this study is to identify regions that hold a great concentration of copper, with the purpose of locating possible new areas of extraction as well as meaning to find regions with possible contaminations caused by the mining activity. The data utilized are multispectral images from the ASTER sensor, obtained in September 28, 2000, courtesy of Université Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier. The method used throughout this work was the band ratios. This method enabled the making of two final products: the image of the studied area classified by the spectral answer of the chalcopyrite and the image of the studied area classified by the spectral answer of the bornite. In order to make a correct reading of the final products, it was used as a mineralization pattern the spectral signature present in the area surrounded by the Tintaya mine. After the final analysis of the obtained products, it was observed that the image resulted from the spectral answer of the chalcopyrite shows with better precision the shape of the regions classified as similar to the area mineralized.
